Dialectic

…the investigation of the truth of opinions through logical discussion. It ‘goes to first principles and lifts the soul’ (Plato – Republic)

Principles of dialectic are: willingness to be proved wrong, love of knowing the truth, following the thread of a conversation and answering
questions. We shall –

  • Consider the nature and benefits of dialectic
  • Observe speech in operation
  • Spot assumptions
  • Contrast dialectic with rhetoric
  • Exercise the ability to combine and divide correctly
  • Distinguish where meanings are different and where they are the same.

All welcome to explore this fundamental subject.
